Algeria: Welcome

ALGERIA - Tassili n'Ajjer

Thousands of years old rock-art, plenty of sunshine, stunning sand dunes, cool oasis town of Djanet

Tassili n'Ajjer is a mountain range in the southern Algerian Sahara, located on the border of Niger. It is known for its unique landscape of towering sandstone formations and rock art, which dates back thousands of years and provides important insights into the lives and cultures of ancient peoples in the region. The area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.

The name "Tassili n'Ajjer" translates to "Plateau of the Rivers" in the local Tamashek language, although the area is mostly dry with very little surface water. However, its geology reveals evidence of a once-wetter climate, with ancient river systems and abundant flora and fauna.

The rock formations of Tassili n'Ajjer have been shaped by the elements over millions of years, resulting in a unique and mesmerizing landscape. Towering sandstone cliffs, eroded canyons, and hidden valleys create a dramatic and awe-inspiring backdrop. The interplay of light and shadow throughout the day adds a mystical ambiance to the already captivating scenery. Tassili n'Ajjer offers an opportunity to connect with nature, to immerse oneself in its grandeur, and to appreciate the harmony between human creativity and the natural world.
