In Western Iran look forwatd to Takht-e-Soleyman, birthplace of zoroastrianism.
Nobody else will show you the villages in the Northeast of the Islamic Republic, even Bandar-e-Torkeman and Gonbad-e-Qabus are not on many people’s itinerary. And let’s not forget the phallic landscape shown in the bottom picture on this page.
And then: Turkmenistan with its cults, the president’s and everybody else’s. We check out a couple of villages on the Iran/Turkemenistan border and the capital city of Ashkhabad, the center of Turkmenistan microcosm.
After Ashkhabad: the Karakum Desert, gas craters and the Turkkmen “bush” nobody knows about. Then Konye Urgench: ancient minarets and palaces.
In Konye Urgenchu we cross the border and drive to the utterly beautiful yet sad & dry Lake Aral.
Khiva is as ancient as possible. A city museum.
Long Uzbek bush drive to Bukhara. Ancient and fairy-tale town of Bukhara - the land
of magical lamps and Eastern beauties. Ancient Great Silk Road caravans never missed this town - the only oasis around.
Nowadays Bukhara is famous not only for it's superb historical monuments, but for it's lively trade. ...every traveler finds something
unique in this town. It is on the UNESCO Heritage list.
Finally Samarkand: the second largest city of Uzbekistan and of the same age as Rome, Athens and Babylon- more than 25 centuries old. Ancient Arab manuscripts refer to it as the “Gem of the East”, Europeans called it the “The Land of Scientists”. A majestic and beautiful city, Samarkand is the city of legends. When Alexander the Great first time saw Samarkand, he exclaimed “ I heard that the city was beautiful but never thought that it could be so beautiful and majestic”.
And in between: the rural Uzbek real life, locals living in Soviet times, corrupt policemen, friendly fruit vendors.
