UNIQUE SUV EXPEDITIONS FROM THE SAHARA TO THE HIMALAYAS

Journeys designed by Dusko M DuSwami

BALKANS + TURKEY + IRAQ + IRAN

BOSNIA, MONTENEGRO, ALBANIA, MACEDONIA, BULGARIA, TURKEY, IRAQ, IRAN

See prices below for explanation on how, where, how long... which countries etc.

Fly-in: Ljubljana, Zagreb or SARAJEVO, where we spend the first night. The lakes of Montenegro appear soon after crossing the Bosnia-Montenegro border. Plenty of little Balkan villages on days 1 and 2. Plenty of good food, too. In Montenegro also Boka Kotorska and perhaps the mountains and canyons of Durmitor.

Then it’s on to Lake Shkodra & the forgotten towns in North Albania and the drive to historical Kruje with its fascinating bazaar.

From Kruje through communist Tirana we sail away to Central Albania and its interesting villages and towns, incl. magical half-Turkish Gjirokastra and/or Berat.

A spectacular road will take us to Korca and on to Ohrid, Macedonia-FYROM. You’ll get a brilliant bird’s eye view of Lake Ohrid from   Galicica National Park. Western Macedonia is also home to some fabulous orthodox monasteries.

We continue to Bulgaria and the monastery of Rila, then on to medieval Plovdiv and on to beautifully restored Edirne in Turkey.

From Edirne it’s on to Safranbolu with its cute old Turkish houses. Then 2 days in moonlike Cappadocia. Then Kurdish Southeastern Turkey: Mt. Nemrut Dagi with its spectacular 2m statues at an altitude of 2000m.

Then we spend 2 days in North Iraq:

Lalish is a small mountain valley situated in northern Iraq about 60 km northwest of the city of Mosul. It is the location of the tomb of Şêx Adî, main figure of the Yazidi faith.

At least once in their lifetime Yazidi's are expected to make a six-day pilgrimage to Lalish to visit the tomb of Şêx Adî.

The Yazidi are a Kurdish ethnoreligious group with Indo-Iranian roots. They currently live primarily in the Nineveh Province of northern Iraq.

After Lalish a spectacular road past canyons and through mountains takes us to the Iraq-Iran border crossing at 1800m.

Our first city in Iran is Piranshahr, then Orumiyeh - a city at an altitude of 1,330 m above sea level on the Shahar Chay river. The population is mainly Azeri Turkish, with Kurdish, Assyrian Christian, and Armenian minorities.

Orumiyeh is situated on a fertile plain called Orumiyeh Plain, on the western side of Lake Orumiyeh. Many theologists believe the orchards in the vicinity of Orumiyeh are actually the biblical Garden of Eden! Unfortunately Orumiyeh Lake is a different story: yet another example of this planet’s ecological disasters.

After Orumiyeh we take scenic roads to the birthplace of Zarathustra (Takht-e-Soleyman), then it’s the Castle of the Assassins (Alamut), then it can be departure from Tehran....

...or on to Esfahan and the Dasht-eKavir desert.

Flight home from Tehran or Kerman or Bandar-e-Abbas.

Travel in both directions is possible.

Statistics: altogether 1500-3000km, some misery can be seen, many happy and sincere people will be met, some people unfortunately have been affected by the recent wars in the Balkans. Coffee is available and so is beer - not in Iran; Albanian cognac rules! Vegetarians will be taken care of.
